HERITAGE: Amy Winehouse Talks With 'Pop World' About How She Started Songwriting (2003)

November 19, 2021

One of the many tragic things about Amy Winehouse's last years, particularly in the wake of the Back To Black album, is that her incredible music was often eclipsed by tabloid headlines and salacious rumours.

Because the thing is, before she lost her battle with addiction, we got to see a generational talent with a razor-sharp wit and a warm, playful personality. Interviews like this one, recorded to promote her first album, Frank, saw Amy at her best.

As ever with Simon Amstell and Popworld, it's a pretty tongue-in-cheek interview, but Amy handles herself well. Matching Amstell's humour measure for measure, the real gems come when she cuts through all of that to talk about her growth as a songwriter and how her debut album evolved and grew from angsty teen songwriting into a fully-realised masterpiece.
