HERITAGE: Amy Winehouse Shows Her Raw Vocals During This Studio Recording Of "Black To Black" (2006)

September 14, 2021

There isn't much about Amy Winehouse's life that hasn't been splashed across tabloid front pages or painstakingly dissected in the music presses, but even with the best of intentions her generational artistry often gets overlooked.

One of the gems in the 2015 documentary Amy, which did also focus on her addiction and untimely passing, was this look back at the recording sessions that went into Back To Black. Featuring in-studio footage and a voiceover from Mark Ronson (who produced the album), the clip goes deep into the recording process as well as the heartbreaking experiences with her one-again-off-again boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil.

It's unbelievably bleak at times — the pain in her voice, the bluntness of her lyrics — but somehow she punctures it with a pitch black humour. Even after baring her soul and silencing a room, as soon as her vocal part is over she hops, skips and jumps away from a moment of vulnerability with a joke. Even when opening up, she pushed people away.

Rest in peace, Amy.
