HERITAGE: Akala Gives A Powerful Seminar And Discussion On Black History At Oxford Union (2015)

June 05, 2020

As we all know, Akala has a lot of strings to his bow — rapper, poet, journalist, author, and more — and he's spent much of his career challenging the mainstream understanding of British history, particularly its racist, colonial past. His Twitter feed alone is a bountiful source of information and myth-busting, even his Fire In The Booth freestyles are packed with knowledge.

So it was about time when he was finally invited to Oxford Union to chair a discussion and host a Q&A about Black history. There's a mountain of information to unpack in the hour-plus video, but to give a quick rundown he touches on everything from ancient history, Nubian art, Ancient Egypt, mathematics, architecture, literature and so much more that it would be impossible to summarise in under 1,000 words. Just make sure you watch the entire thing.

For added context, it's worth pointing out that EDL figurehead Tommy Robinson (whom Akala resoundingly defeated in debate just two years earlier) was also invited to give a speech at the Oxford Union earlier the same year. That alone should tell you why Akala's appearance was so essential and why his words remain invaluable to this day, perhaps even more so.

Once you've finished that, make sure you watch the debate Lowkey's chaired at the Oxford Union from last year.
