Fredwave's "Shovel" Is A Tense And Disorienting Experience

February 25, 2021

Arriving with his first drop of 2021, Fredwave's "Shovel" is a disorienting cataclysm to upend the senses.

Beginning with a motion that feels like a car skidding out of control, "Shovel" starts with a clash of percussion that's soon joined by strained, soulful vocals from Fredwave that gradually build toward a chaotic climax.

Like a bottle top spinning in a frenzy, "Shovel" soon eases back down from its crescendo as Fredwave reaches equilibrium, sliding gently into free verse: In all black and I'm seeing double/It must be trouble, he warns. Finally, as "Shovel" concludes, we eventually reach some semblance of rationality, although the extreme sense of unease remains.

Matching the track's jittery energy, Jay Russell's visuals perfectly capture the essence of "Shovel". The unsettling camera angles, married with bold contrasts between light and dark, are almost reminiscent of film noir and further add to the ominous mystery.
