DJ Lag And OKZharp Join Forces To Blow Your House Down On Thunderous "Nyusa"

June 06, 2019

Here's something ravers around the world should be very, very excited about: Durban's gqom king, DJ Lag, has partnered up with Hyperdub party crusher OKZharp for a new collaborative EP called Steam Rooms.

It turns out the pair have been friends for some time now, linking up for the first time way back in 2012. However, because of their frantic touring and work schedules, we've had to wait until now for them to put out their first release together. Still, we can't look a gift horse in the mouth, can we?

The Steam Rooms EP (due July 17) is the fruit of their collective labour and if lead track "Nyusa" is anything to go by, we're in for a heart-racing, city-levelling collection. A percussion-heavy thumper with drums so big and noisy it borders on the industrial, "Nyusa" is sure to drive you into a state of lunacy with its equally devastating low-end.

Of the EP's title, Lag explains: "They used to refer to clubs as 'steam rooms'; a lot of the early gqom-style music was played in these places—there were quite a few tracks named after them. The name for the EP is a tribute to that."
