Daniellé Dash Lays Out The History Of Black British Representation On UK TV In New Doc

November 02, 2020

As part of Black History Month, Netflix UK have called on screenwriter, journalist and polymath Daniellé Dash to create a 15-minute documentary detailing the history of Black representation on UK TV screens. Spoiler alert: there's some pretty bleak moments in British TV's past.

The highly detailed run-through begins in 1956 with historic docudrama Man From The Sun, which was the first time Black actors were featured regularly on UK TV, and brings us right up to the present day.

While there's a lot to be ashamed of (e.g. the swivel-eyed white rage in support of the Black & White Minstrel Show, not to mention the re-emergence of blackface in the 2000s), there are at least a few glimmers of hope thanks to groundbreaking shows like Desmond's, Three Non Blondes, Babyfather and, more recently, Chewing Gum and Top Boy.
