Chi Virgo Kicks Her Old Life To The Curb On "Bye Bye"

May 22, 2020

Sorely underrated singer-songwriter Chi Virgo should by rights be a phenomenon. Her last two singles, "Thinking" and "Too Good", stand tall as empowering, razor-sharp piece of R&B-meets-neo-soul, balancing delicate melodies against stoic lyricism and slick funk bass lines.

Her new single "Bye Bye", written over two years ago, might be the most pure example of that combination. In it, she uses the concept of saying goodbye to an ex as a metaphor for leaving behind an equally unsatisfying period in her life. Both experiences, it seems, can be as cathartic as they are reinvigorating.

Undeterred by the Covid-19 lockdown, the new single also comes with a DIY video that honestly feels a little bit like being broken up with over Zoom. As many of us are realising, the lockdown period is making us stop, re-evaluate and hopefully make some changes.

"When I first moved to London, for a time I felt I was a little bit lost and directionless," she explains. "I had to take on a job that I wasn't happy in to make ends meet, and for a while I wasn't sure about how to move forwards. Although on paper this song is about a relationship, it also feels special as it is a symbol of me saying goodbye to that time period and coming to truly understand myself."
