Camden's KOKO Venue Badly Damaged After Fire But Thankfully No Casualties Reported

January 08, 2020

Last night at 9pm, KOKO, London's famed Camden venue which has played host to Madonna and Prince, caught ablaze with almost 30% of the buildings roof catching fire at one point.

The fire continued to burn until around 3am until 60 firefighters, along with eight trucks, were able combat the flames and put them out, saving the building with only the roof of the venue suffering from substantial damage and, thankfully, no casualties.

Station commander Jon Lewis praised his fire fighters, saying: "Firefighters' quick action and hard work in the early stages meant the fire was contained to the roof and saved the rest of the building. Fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the morning."

The venue has remained closed since March and was undergoing a £40 million refurbishment, which was set to be unveiled during spring of the new year.

KOKO thanked firefighters over social media with the venue's owner, Olly Bengough, releasing a statement saying: "We are deeply saddened by the fire that took place at KOKO last night and pleased to announce there have been no casualties. We want to thank the London Fire Brigade for its quick response and how well it handled the situation. The amount of support we have received from the public has been amazing and we'll be doing our best to get the redevelopment of this iconic building back on-track."
