Brighton-Based Trio HOWES3 Jam Out On Soulful Jazz Cut "Too Many Kicks"

February 14, 2020

Brighton-based jazz trio HOWES3 — aka Oli Howe on piano, Marcus Porter on bass and Luke Campbell on drums — only emerged with their first single last year, but their instincts and cohesion make them sound as if they've been playing together for years.

Now they're dropping their third single, their first of the new decade, "Too Many Kicks". Oli's beloved Rhodes piano is the star of the show here, plunging the listener back to the 1970s with free-wheeling melodies that could've come from any of the greats.

There are more twists and turns than anyone could reasonably expect, instead playing out like an uninhibited freestyle session, switching up time signatures like it's nothing, but always bringing the track back to its origins eventually.

Uplifting and dripping in the classic funk and soul tropes that all three are so enamoured with, if this is what they can do in just five-and-a-half minutes, it'll be interesting to see what they can do with a whole album.
