Crowdfunder Campaign Launched For Documentary Celebrating Brixton's Cultural Legacy
A new documentary celebrating Brixton's storied cultural legacy in the works, and they need one last round of funding to complete the film.
Using Brixton Market and Recreation Centre as focal points, 'Beyond Brix & Mortar' is a self-described "love letter to Brixton" that charts the story of the area, the Caribbean immigrants who have left such an indelible mark over successive generations, and the communities that followed who together have built one of the most culturally rich parts of London.
The film was co-directed by Daniyal Harris-Vajda, who grew up in Brixton and has lived there for the last 30 years and Charlie Rollins whose grandmother was part of the Windrush generation and also lived in Brixton. Other contributions come from DJ, director and musician Don Letts and Leila Hassan, founding member of the Race Today Collective and editor of Race Today editorial journal.
It also tells the story of how the residents have fought to resist waves of gentrification and mass cultural production on every front—music, food, literature, sport, and style—and how that resilience has itself influenced the character of Brixton.
Another threat the film explores is the over-policing faced by the area, the criticism levied by local and national governments, and the ramifications of moments like the arrival of the Windrush Generation from the 1940s to the early '70s, the Brixton uprisings in the 1980s and early '90s, and the ongoing Windrush scandal.
