Azekel Stirs R&B, Psychedelic Rock And Nigerian Funk Into 'Sonic Incense' EP
Following a string of recent singles and a standout appearance on KOKOROKO's recent Get The Message extract "Three Piece Suit', Azekel shares his new EP, Sonic Incense.
As has become his signature, Nigerian-born, East London-raised, Azekel's influences are drawn from both sides, taking cues from Yoruba culture and legends like Fela Kuti and Sunny Ade, and mixing them with the eclectic patchwork of sounds that surrounded him in East London.
Alongside the new EP, comes keystone single "Same Wayz". Sensual and infectiously catchy, Azekel's love of Nigerian funk and psychedelic rock makes its presence felt in a big way on this one. For the video, director Nathan Baxter films a grainy performance piece, keeping Azekel and just a few supporting players in the spotlight.
Speaking on the new EP, Azekel shares: "This project continues the journey I started on my last EP, delving deeper into human relationships, but this time, I explore love's sensual, intimate, and passionate sides. A lot of the songs are about the ideas of Love, Sex and God, and I'm curious how these subjects interlink. Men rarely discuss intimacy and sensuality, but I hope Sonic Incense can open up that conversation."
