Leeds Rapper ATO Breaks Down The Oversimplification Of The Black British Experience On Powerful And Affecting "Monster"

July 17, 2018

Yorkshire-born rapper ATO might well have delivered one of the most potent discussions on race and black British identity for a very long time with his new video "Monster".

The video itself is powerful enough (and stunningly put together by filmmaking duo Zhang and Knight, we have to say), but its the lyrical content that will really stun you. Over a fragile, twinkling melody, ATO's poetic bars gather pace as he describes his experiences from childhood to the present day.

At whirlwind pace, he lists microaggressions and hurtful acts of ignorance; from people mispronouncing his name to treating him as an 'other', never quite fitting in with those around him and his journey towards making sense of it it all.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the track, ATO told Trench via email: "This video draws on my own experience with identity, growing up as a black person in the Yorkshire countryside, reflecting a very different perspective to the singular urban, concrete portrayal, that I believe can at times over simplify the experience of being black in Britain."

The new video comes as part of an overarching audio-visual project ATO has been working on with his friends over the past 12 months. So make sure you keep an eye out for what's next.
