Aniefiok Ekpoudom To Explore UK Rap And Social History In Debut Book

October 27, 2023

Early next year, music and culture writer Aniefiok Ekpoudom will release his debut book, Where We Come From: Rap, Home And Hope In Modern Britain.

The book is described as "a landmark social history of British rap and grime—from the artists and communities who created and were shaped by the music, to the listeners who found a sense of identity and home within it—by one of the nation's foremost cultural chroniclers."

Detailing how the UK's rap subcultures have come to existence, the connections with migration, and the enduring spirit of resistance that runs through it all, Where We Come From is set to be a landmark document for the culture.

The book will be published by Faber in January 2024. The publishing house's synopsis of it reads: "Something is happening in Britain, trembling the tracks as it unfolds. Recent years have borne witness to underground genres leaking out from the inner cities, going on to become some of the most popular music in the nation.

"In this groundbreaking social history, journalist Aniefiok Ekpoudom travels the country to paint a compelling portrait of the dawn, boom and subsequent blossoming of UK rap and grime. Taking us from the heart of south London to the West Midlands and South Wales, he explores how a history of migration and an enduring spirit of resistance have shaped the current realities of these linked communities and the music they produce."

Ekpoudom has been covering UK rap for some years now, including contributions to TRENCH, exploring the culture in the depth and detail it deserves and there are few people better positioned to undertake the giant task of putting together such a book.

Where We Come From: Rap, Home And Hope In Modern Britain arrives January 18 via Faber. Pre-order the book here.

To mark the publication, Ekpoudom will be discussing it at a special event at London's Southbank Centre on January 26.
