Ama Lou Marks A New Era With Genre-Bending 'At Least We Have This'

November 29, 2021

It was just weeks ago when Ama Lou stepped away from her brief hiatus to hand over the reflective "Trust Nobody" (produced by West Coast beatmakers D33J and Shlohmo). Now she returns with a four-track project titled At Least We Have This, showcasing her genre-morphing abilities.

Clocking in at just over 12 minutes, this is more than enough time for the North Londoner to reinterpret genres like drill, garage and R&B, all while flexing her soulful pen game to draw us in each time.

Each track is a highlight moment within the project, she kicks things off with the previously-released single at the top of the project before shifting into "Same Old Ways", a track underpinned by its Afrobeats textures thanks to Maestro The Baker's production and Ama's use of R&B melodies and harmonies—a common thread in her music.

Then there's the Conducta-produced "All I Can Say", which creates a timeless moment for Ama Lou with its nods to the old school garage days. Finally, Ama piques our attention when she draws the EP to a close with the drill-leaning "Talk Quiet", driven by the choppy drum patterns of Kid Spyral and Frosty Beats' instrumental, which she gracefully decorates with her melodies.

Keeping things short and sweet this time around, hopefully this is the start of a more frequent release schedule from the versatile and dextrous singer-songwriter.
