Abbey Road Studios Launches New Scholarship For Black Students

October 29, 2020

London's Abbey Road Studios have announced the official launch of the Abbey Road Scholarship. This programme will provide two Black students a place to study at the Abbey Road Institute in London each year, following a work placement of one year.

The Abbey Road Scholarship, formally starting in 2021, will "cover the full cost of the course fees and contribute towards living expenses for two Black British students annually to study on Abbey Road Institute's Advanced Diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering," they say in a press release.

If successful, two graduate students will be offered a year-long trainee engineering position within Abbey Road Studios and an opportunity to study for an Advanced Diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering. Abbey Road Studios have also announced plans to create more mentoring opportunities for young Black people who are frequently marginalised in order to create meaningful change within the music industry.

"I'm thrilled that this programme will create new opportunities for aspiring young engineers by giving them not just the educational foundation, but also the benefit of practical experience working with the best artists, composers and engineers in the industry," said Isabel Garvey, Abbey Road's managing director.

"Abbey Road has always been about training the best studio talent," she adds, "so it's brilliant that the scholarship will help diversify the next generation of engineering professionals from the ground up."

Abbey Road Studios have laid down a marker, making an explicit commitment to create initiatives that help those that need it most.
