Between SoundCloud, YouTube, Mixcloud and everything else, it can feel like we’re being overwhelmed by an impenetrable, almost infinite stream of music, often of varying quality. You need a soundtrack to start your weekend right, but you don’t have the requisite lifetime to trawl through the week’s new DJ mixes. To help you out, we’ve done the busy work for you. We’ll be running this series every single Friday of every single week to bring you the very finest house music, grime, techno, bashment, R&B, trap, D&B, Amapiano, and no doubt a bunch of stuff that doesn’t have a name yet.

New Cross Road was spoiled rotten at the top of this month when rave frontiersman Normski dropped in at the Planet Wax store for a 60-minute jungle and D&B set. Precious few are as qualified as Normski when it comes to rave. Alongside “On A Ragga Tip” pioneers SL2, Normski’s early ‘90s show Dance Energy was an invaluable early beacon for ravers to tap into hardcore, jungle, rave, techno and hip-hop—and as this mix shows, he hasn’t lost his edge one bit.

The elusive yet industrious Commodo turned in an outstanding dubstep workout this month. The new mix celebrates the dubstep producer’s recent collaborative release with Gantz, ’89!’, as part of Ilian Tape’s ITX series. Clocking in at 68 minutes, it’s packed to the gills with meaty, cavernous dubstep lurchers. Chilly and atmospheric, but still filled with the kind of emotive soulfulness his creations are known for, it’s a skilful example of mood-building.

A new supergroup has emerged this year. Delv Deep, which comprises Donwella, Elsa Dove, Viri$$ and Louis VI, played their inaugural set as a four-piece earlier this month down at Balamii. A 90-minute power session was an energising intro to the four-piece, focusing on the best Baile, Bouyon and Miami Bass in their record bags. Highlights include jams from NKC, Pearson Sound, BAMBII, and Karol G.

The new mix arrives not long after the release of the DC native’s most recent project, his latest record, 'The Lost Tape Vol. 3', an album he cooked up with producer and engineer Black Moses. That album paid tribute to the sounds of pirate radio and the call-and-response spontaneity of his home state’s Go-Go scene. Here, he keeps things just as fluid, incorporating a lot of his own creations as he finds commonality in driving club music and soulful melodies. As he puts it, “from Faith Evans to Autechre”.

We were spoiled rotten with this unimaginable Voltron-like team-up of radio royalty. Taking us right back to the very earliest days of Rinse with a mix of classic grime, dubstep, jungle, hardcore and all that good stuff. An absolute treat for OG Rinse listeners (they even used the original Rinse logo for the artwork), the five of them took us on a bit of a nostalgic trip through the record bags and their memory banks to usher in the new era of residents, many of whom are very familiar faces (including Roska himself).

For the latest edition of her show, Midrib, aka one half of the LIFELOOSEduo, called on SI*BL for this month’s sparring session. Fast and furious from the get-go, this one is wall-to-wall skippy, wonky edits and chops with plenty of low-end welly. Everyone fom Sir Spyro to Sister Nancy gets the treatment in this breakneck session in the Reprezent studios.

Another batch of ultra-high-intensity club rattlers from the Detroit trio. Tethering themselves to 160BPM, the rapper-producer-DJs King Milo, Milf Melly, and 47Chops dished out a mix of footwork and ghettotech infused with heart attack techno, R&B grooves and more. A timely and effective primer ahead of their next LP, Honeypaqq Vol. 1, which drops in August.

It was Ronnie Loko’s birthday this month and to celebrate, he stepped into the Oroko Radio studios for a warming, summer-ready edition of the Y3NKO! show. Pure heatwave bangers from start to finish, he served up an eclectic blend, including his remix of Terri Walker’s “I’m Not The One”, the VIP version of Mxshi Mo and Scratchclart’s evergreen “Afrotek”, a gqom version of Burna Boy and Travis Scott, and the latest team-up from SMS For Location teammates Nino Augustine and Uproot Andy.

A crucial figure in the COMO VOCÊ story, São Paulo selector Peroli’s role in grime finding its foothold in Brazil cannot be overstated. She’s been DJing since 2018 and championing the sound of grime pretty much as soon as she started. The energy’s always sky-high with Peroli, and she does a huge amount with the 30-minute runtime here. This is the first of five sets while she its the road (including stop-offs in Dublin and Croydon this month), and features juiced-up garage, bassline, grime and more.

Abantu founder and one half of The Ascension (alongside Koek Sista), Charisse C brought us another chapter in her continued exploration of what Zimbabwe, South Africa and the surrounding regions have to offer. There’s a good dose of gqom, Amapiano and Afro-house, of course, but there’s also a lot of different, often under-represented strains of house music to be found here.
