Between SoundCloud, YouTube, Mixcloud and everything else, it can feel like we’re being overwhelmed by an impenetrable, almost infinite stream of music, often of varying quality. You need a soundtrack to start your weekend right, but you don’t have the requisite lifetime to trawl through the week’s new DJ mixes. To help you out, we’ve done the busy work for you. We’ll be running this series every single Friday of every single week to bring you the very finest house music, grime, techno, bashment, R&B, trap, D&B, Amapiano, and no doubt a bunch of stuff that doesn’t have a name yet.

Ruff Sqwad are back in a big way this year. Last month, the pioneering grime crew returned with Flee FM 2, a storming seven-track EP that captured the energy and raw dynamism of live sets and pirate radio on wax. With that, came the ‘Flee FM 2: The Film’, taking that mission even further with some serious production value. In its new Monday timeslot, My Nu Leng’s WAVELENGTH’s show took us to Washington, DC this month with a guestmix from local trio Black Rave Culture. Held up, with some justification, as the heir to the Belleville 3’s place in the pantheon, The Washington, D.C. trio of Amal, James Bangura and Nativesun are revered for their hybrid techno sound that prioritises funk and vibrancy above all. That said, techno is more of a chassis for the three whose picks come from garage, gqom, Amapiano, 160 club music, ghettotech and much farther flung realms. Sparing here with My Nu Leng, it’s a heart-racing session from the outset.

The latest to step up for Residnt Advisor’s Greehouse Sessions, Parris took a look back at his upbringing and the Caribbean records that raised him. Focusing largely on dancehall, particularly the more melodic side of things, Parris transported us to his youth going to Notting Hill Carnival in the ‘90s. In with that, he sprinkles dashes of dubstep and even a hint of techno, but never straying too far from the mission: an off-the-beaten track mix of Carnival-ready dancehall.

Crowding the core members of the expansive (and in some cases elusive) members of Chalk Farm’s first family, OFB, into the same room at the same time is no mean feat is never going to fully happen, not now. But this month M1OnTheBeat and JTK beat the odds and rounded up almost all of them. Joining the pair in the Balamii studio were Headie One, RV, Izzpot, Lowkey, Kash, Dezzie, Laddski, DJ JTK, Blitty, and Starrish Kush and it was, frankly, historic. It was a feat unlikely to be repeated any time soon, not least because of Headie One and RV’s nostalgic sparring session.

It’s Manara’s birthday this month and she’s been in high spirits for the duration. She made her Sub Club debut at the top of the month, but it was her appearance at Madrid’s Antidoto that clinched it for us. Joined on the bill by Yofo, Largoofy, Candelaxfavor, Skichi, and Diego Armando, the Pure Spice host whipped up an hour of house, speed garage, breaks, dancehall, reggaeton and more.

In the wake of his breaks-heavy, bass-heavy recent single, “The Chant”, L-Vis 1990 made his debut on foundation.fm this month. Here he span a selection of 10 new and upcoming creations of his own, plus a stack of heaters from across the board. Not only that, but Connolly, who only made his return as L-Vis 1990 a year or so ago, hinted in the coments that the Dance System alias might not be entirely dead… at least for now.

Manchester-based DJ Interplanetary Criminal and Copenhagen DJ/producer Main Phase have been firm friends for some time; they’ve been appearing on lineups together for years and now run their own label together, ATW Records. For the past few months or so, the pair have been taking their wares on tour in support of the label, doing damage on pretty much every continent. During a stop off in New York, the pair swung by The LOT Radio for a quick blast on the decks. On form as always, listen out for crackers from Silva Bumpa, Soul Mass Transit System, Jeremy Sylvester some unreleased Main Phase and more.

Charisma was back on the air this month for another top team-up, this time joining Izzi, a core team member of the Daytimers set, and guest Vigilante, a newly-minted resident at foundation.fm. Both DJs are seasoned radio and club selectors with wildly varied tastes that stretch across grime, garage, gqom, Amapiano, techno, dancehall, and way beyond. For this one, the trio dig deep into sound system culture with a voyage through the lower frequencies. Energetic, spontaneous, and packed with speaker bursters.

West London’s Teddy Bones boasts one of the most eclectic record collections around. Though he’s usually tethered somewhere between the 140 and 160 BPMs, that still leaves him plenty of space to play with. He’s to play just about anything from footwork to soca to dubstep, but this one for the Kindred lot kept it pretty 140-focused with a tight and bouncy hour of grime, garage and funky.

Back after a bit of quiet spell, Dobbs made what she calls a slow return to the DJing game with the first edition of her newly minted ‘Practise Hours’. Ostensibly, mixes that give them a chance to flex and try some stuff out they might not necesarily get to drop in club settings. A real sprint through the genres and vibes, this one bundles together D&B, garage, dance pop, some spring-loaded breaks—and that’s just the first 20 minutes. Highlights include Badger’s Julia Wolf remix and some slicker-than-grease blends.
