Between SoundCloud, YouTube, Mixcloud and everything else, it can feel like we’re being overwhelmed by an impenetrable, almost infinite stream of music, often of varying quality. You need a soundtrack to start your weekend right, but you don’t have the requisite lifetime to trawl through the week’s new DJ mixes. To help you out, we’ve done the busy work for you. We’ll be running this series every single Friday of every single week to bring you the very finest house music, grime, techno, bashment, R&B, trap, D&B, Amapiano, and no doubt a bunch of stuff that doesn’t have a name yet.

Dive into TRENCH Radio’s best mixes of the month below.

💥💥💥

Joker for Resident Advisor

One thing that made the early dubstep years so wild was just how many visionary talents there were, all priding themselves on originality. The psychedelic, funk-driven, ‘purple’ sound cooked up by Joker, Guido and Gemmy has stood the test of time better than most. In recent years, he’s opted to focus on production and behind-the-scenes work with other artists. At the start of 2024, he put out his first solo production in six years, “Juggernaut”, and now he returns with his first DJ mix in seven. Naturally, it’s a masterclass, slipping between grime edits, proto-dubstep, some new and unreleased joints, and, as only he could, an appearance from Duke Ellington.

Skream B2B Mala for Boiler Room

When Skream and Mala hopped on deck for a B2B in Denver this month it was the stuff dubstep dreams are made of. Skream and Benga’s reunion earlier this year was emotional enough, but this match-up is just as special. The contrast between Skream’s freewheeling energy and Mala’s calming presence is a combination that’s completely unique to these two. It’s reflected in the tracklist as well, which gives us a comprehensive spread of every kind of dubstep, there’s something for everyone here, from cavernous minimalism to screwface screechers.

Oh Annie Oh for Foundation FM

It’s been a big year for Oh Annie Oh. Justifiably buoyed by the release of her bass-heavy debut EP, Block N Delete, the latest stop-off on her victory lap took her to Foundation FM for the Gauchworld takeover. Joining Ella DHC, Chamber45, Louis Culture, Bina. and Gauchworld founder Dean, Annie came armed with a well-stocked bag of rap and grime edits, juiced-up club trax, peak-time thumpers and late-night sizzlers. A little heavier than her debut EP, Block N Delete, but still charged with plenty of low-end to get the bassbins rattling.

Gomes for Keep Hush

A hugely important institution repping dubstep in Amsterdam, Gomes and team have been advocating for the sound pretty much since day one. In the mid-2000s, Gomes ran a weekly grime show on Dutch pirate radio alongside Andrew Makkinga and the Oi! nights at Paradiso in Amsterdam are the stuff of legend. A label soon followed, putting out releases from D Double E, Benga, JLSXND7RS, Trends and Flirta D, and now, two decades in, the legacy is set in stone. This latest set from Gomes is the Dutch master at his best, taking us from his 2-step roots through dubstep, grime with up-to-the-minute takes on all three.

Manga Saint Hilare’s GRIMEMIX002

Manga returned to the decks this month for the second instalment of his newly minted GRIMEMIX series. It’s the latest venture in a stacked year for Manga, who seems more inspired and productive than ever. This year alone, he partnered with MoreNight to deliver some of his best work to date on Everything Is Under Control, then came a collab with Kamakaze (his second this year, after Kam appeared LP), followed by a surprising feature on a disco tune by Canadian producer Sleepy Tom. Applying the same pressure he always does, Manga serves up a tight half-hour set, including tracks from Jammz, Kruz Leone, Logan OLM, Novelist, Renz, Rocks FOE and more, plus instrumentals from Dot Rotten, Silencer, J Beatz, and of course, Manga’s long-time collaborator, Lewi B.

Introspekt for Subtle Radio x Bass Coast

Technically recorded this summer, Sage Introspekt’s Bass Coast set was broadcast via Subtle Radio a couple of weeks ago, wrapping up a jammed tour schedule for the LA selector. Known primarily as one of the West Coast’s loudest and produest proponents of UK garage, Introspekt’s Bass Coast set let us all know how much more there is to her selections. Kicking off with a spartan club edit of Ludacris and Shwanna’s “What’s Your Fantasy”, tribal drum patterns, a breaks-y remix of Blanco, and yes, plenty of garage, too.

Glade Marie for Aprtment Life

Making a grand return to the Aprtment, Glade Marie hit hard with this all-killer hour of hip-hop, soul, R&B, gospel, Alte and more. She brings the same revitalising energy to this mix that made this month’s Late With Glade weekly residency at Buster Mantis in Deptford so successful. A veteran of Saffron and No Signal, she’s been plugged into the UK’s multidimensional club scene for years, but it’s her lifelong obsession with rap and turntablism that make her whipcrack blends and on-the-fly edits so effective.

Kirby T w/ Logan for Reprezent

A Swiss army knife of grime, Logan’s been firing on all cylinders this year, flexing his production muscle, willing his debut project into existence, and just this week he got back into producer mode to put his own spin on Chip and co’s “Grime Scene Saviours” set. To celebrate the release of his debut album, Logan From The OtherSide (written, produced, performed, mixed and mastered all by Logan himself), Logan_OLM was on air with Kirby T for a special 1Up set where he ripped through a half-hour of beats entirely of his own making.

Surusinghe B2B Mi-El for Rinse FM

Banging out a quick sidequest away from her usual slot on NTS 2, mi-el was in the Rinse studio for what she says was a “dream b2B’ with Naarm selector Surusinghe (who recently launched Drifting, a new party series and blog). Smashing together Mi-El’s UK perspective (with its distinct grime/bass bent) and Surusinghe’s outsider perspective on those very same sounds yields some rewarding results. Hydraulic percussion, slippery bass lines and fidgety 2-step abound are thrown together with farther flung club sound slotted in for extra spice. Listen out for particularly tough tracks from Big Kani, Unwell, and DJ JM.

Mantra for NTS Radio

It’s been a staggering 18 years since Mantra and Double O launched Rupture. Plenty has changed since then, but the D&B institution’s open, anti-snobbery ethos stands firm. There have been a few DJ sets and radio shows marking the occasion, but Mantra’s extra weighty selections nudged this one over the line. The apex of the Rupture birthday celebrations kick off tonight at Corsica where Mantra and Dubz are hosting the first of a two-day party featuring the likes of Tim Reaper, Digital, Vxrgo, Blackeye, DJ Sofa, Decibella, Quartz, and more.
