TRENCH Radio 151: The Best Mixes Of The Week

Words: James Keith

Between SoundCloud, YouTube, Mixcloud and everything else, it can feel like we’re being overwhelmed by an impenetrable, almost infinite stream of music, often of varying quality. You need a soundtrack to start your weekend right, but you don’t have the requisite lifetime to trawl through the week’s new DJ mixes. To help you out, we’ve done the busy work for you. We’ll be running this series every single Friday of every single week to bring you the very finest house music, grime, techno, bashment, R&B, trap, D&B, Amapiano, and no doubt a bunch of stuff that doesn’t have a name yet.

Dive into TRENCH Radio’s best mixes of the week below.

💥💥💥

Dr. Dubplate for DJ Mag

Ahead of his appearance at Snowbombing Festival in April, ec2a boss Dr Dubplate turned in this new set, ripping through a stack of garage, house and breaks weightiness and splicing in a tonne of dancefloor nostalgia along the way. Snowbombing’s far from his only booking on the horizon, either. If you’re not going to be there, he’s got new fewer than 10 other dates scheduled across the UK and France. And that’s to say nothing of the upcoming releases the label has in store, including the imminent Ring Ring EP from Bristol-based producer Fonzo with Capo Lee on mic duties and a remix from DJ ADHD.

Plastician’s ‘Party Ah Keep Special’ Mix for Mode London

It’s been a busy week of radio for Stish. This one for Mode is one of three he’s put out in fairly quick succession, including a stint on Scratcha’s Soup To Nuts show on NTS this morning. For this mix, he serves up a two-hour winter warmer ahead of his recent appearance with Logan at the first in Mode’s new monthly series, Party Ah Keep at The Archives, Tottenham. Listen out for plenty of Terrorhythm goodies, the obligatory dubplates, and plenty of other gems from the dubstep, grime and wave sections of his vast record collection.

Big Dope P for Pound And Yam

Today, Moveltraxx have just dropped off their Street Bangers Factory Vol. 26—a five-piece with new tracks from DJ Earl (remixing Gettoblaster and Missy), DJ Animebby, Alex Autajon (remixing Text Chunk and Hood Joplin), and Bancal. Ahead of that, Big Dope P and Earl swung by the Pound And Yam a two-parter. Earl’s was a spacey mix of melody-heavy footwork, but it’s P’s that narrowly won out for us, offering up a big bag of club and footwork firecrackers. There’s a bunch of his own creations here, including personal favourites “Bigolbutt” and “Tangara” to wrap things up, and in with that, he serves up cuts from Slugo, DJ Tameil, DJ Funk, Traxman, Earl, DJ Manny and a few from the late legend DJ Rashad.

Oblig B2B MJK w/ Jason Paige for Keep Hush

Oblig’s love for all things Pokémon is no secret. Little nods to the Nintendo classic have been present in what he does for years now. We thought it had peaked back in 2021 when he revealed on his show that he’d tracked down the singer of the original Pokémon show’s theme, Jason Paige, and gotten him to record a dub (listen here, it’s amazing), but new heights were scaled recently when Oblig celebrated his birthday at Keep Hush with the Paige by his side on mic duties. And for the bonus round, make sure you listen to his latest Rinse show with a whole bag of MCs including Flirta D, Big Zuu, Manga Saint Hilare, Trappy, Drizz, D.H, and Sox. You can listen to that here.

Tailor Jae for EQ50

Tailor Jae’s been on quite a radio run this past month and a bit. A coupe of weeks ago, she had Frisco on board for her Heavy On The Bass show on Rinse, chatting about the latest goings on with The Den and spraying over grime, techno, garage and a bunch more sounds. Then, earlier this week, she joined Riz La Teef for a breaks and bass B2B on his show. And for the hat trick, she was invited to dip into her D&B and jungle collection to put together this new breaks-heavy session for DJ Flight’s EQ50 platform. And if you haven’t had your fill of Tailor after that, go run up her jungle(-ish) slammer “The Wheel” on her Bandcamp and catch her in Brighton tonight with Bakey and Capo Lee on their ‘AM To PM’ tour.
