While we’re loath to bring up lockdown yet again, the inescapable fact is that it has permanently changed all of us. Beyond changing how we go about our lives, it’s also fundamentally affected who we are, and that’s something that seems particularly true of Essex singer-songwriter Imoni who explores that very subject with her new single “Energy”.

Imoni’s first track since “Money” in 2017, “Energy” and the creative process behind it saw her recalibrate herself, using the tumultuous period of isolation to reflect on herself and embark on a journey of self-discovery and ultimately empowerment. The result is something of a departure from the soulful jazz tones of her last single, laying her voice against smooth, smouldering electronics with just a hint of darkness creeping in at the edges.

Despite the understated tone of the track, she sounds fired up and reinvigorated, which hopefully means it’s not the only new music she’s been working on. “‘Energy’ is the first song I wrote during lockdown and the first track I’ve recorded in years,” she explains, “so it feels like the start of a new chapter for me. 2020 has been a significant time for change and I’ve also felt a change in myself as I’ve grown more confident and empowered myself. The track reflects the dark undertone of this year, but also shows how I’m embracing my new energy and staying focused on my vision.”
