EXCLUSIVE: Anjelo Disons Unites With Mula And Vels For Smoky Jazz Number “Time”

This week, multi-talented South London jazz musician Anjelo Disons drops his new double single, “Brighter Day” and “Time”. The former is a free-wheeling jazz-rap fusion with Yizzy, but for “Time” Disons dips into an even more expansive sound than ever, calling on Society Of Alumni members Mula and Vels as well as Oracle saxophonist Deji Ijishakin.

The result is a free-flowing, stream-of-consciousness whirlpool of soaring sax melodies, soulful singing and mind-expanding rhymes, all weaving in and out of each other, ebbing and flowing at the drop of a hat.

“‘Time’, like most of my songs, started in a jam with my brothers Jordan Hatfield and Wilf Cameron Marples that was recorded as a voice note. Many songs were written that night but the song stuck in my head in particular so we started writing the chorus immediately. I remember going to the studio after, before I’d even written the rest, laying down for the track with both Jordan and Wilf in one take!

“Eventually, over the course of a month I’d say, I would write the song and invite the talented Oracle Saxophonist Deji Ijishakin and Mula who brought in fellow Society of Alumni member Vels to bless the track with a beautifully constructed verse. It was the last song written for the project but I knew straight away it had to be one of the first released. ‘Time’ is about me coming to the realisation with my peers that everything in life from the birth or a bird to the death of a tree happens in time. I feel the song expresses throughout what is meant be yours will come but takes the ultimate patience through life to allow it manifest.”

Both “Brighter Day” and “Time” are a precursor to Disons’ upcoming EP, The Garden, which is due to drop later this year. Hit play at the top to watch the melancholic visuals from painter and animator Yaz Bon.
