Video Streams Are Going To Start Counting Towards The UK Singles Chart

June 26, 2018

Last week, we brought you news that YouTube would be launching a brand new service on July 1 called YouTube Music, replacing Google Play and taking on streaming giants Apple Music and Spotify. Well, it appears the Google knew exactly what they were doing, and when to do it.

More news has since arrived that from July 6 onwards, the UK Singles Chart would officially count video plays towards their streaming figures. Specifically, 100 streams via a subscription service (i.e. a paid/premium accounts like YouTube Music) will count as one sale. 600 "free" streams will equate to one sale.

While this could be very promising news for artists who distribute most of their music via YouTube, it's worth remembering that the UK's biggest music video in 2017 was Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" and that Dua Lipa's "New Rules" was the most streamed video by a female artist (60 million UK streams).

Still, there are plenty of reasons to remain optimistic. Just because the stratospheric figures of some artists will keep them at the top, doesn't mean the rest of the charts won't see a major shake-up, particularly as more UK rap, grime and maybe even drill start to invade the charts.

We can hope.
