Stormzy Has Launched A Cambridge University Scholarship For Young, Black Britons

August 16, 2018

Earlier this morning, Stormzy headed back to his old school, Harris Academy in Crystal Palace, to talk to students as they awaited their A-Level results.

As well as offering encouragement to the nervous teens, Stormzy also announced a brand new initiative he's launching called The Stormzy Scholarship. The scholarship fund offers to cover the full cost of tuition fees for four students and provide them with a maintenance grant for up to four years of any undergraduate course.

Two of those students will start this October with the remaining two students selected for 2019 entry. The funding comes from the man himself and aims to encourage more black students to apply to the university, particularly those who might otherwise feel discouraged from applying for financial reasons. Investors are already being sought to grow the fund to make it available for even more students in the future.

Stormzy was quoted as saying: "It's so important for black students, especially, to be aware that it can 100% be an option to attend a university of this calibre."

"We're a minority," he added, "the playing ground isn't level for us and it's vital that all potential students are given the same opportunity."

This new initiative is yet another example of Stormzy giving the next generation the tools they need to go even further in life and comes just over a month after he announced the Merky Books imprint with Penguin publishing house.
