Skepta's New Single "Pure Water" Features A Nod To A Roll Deep Classic

May 08, 2018

Last night, with very little fanfare, Skepta dropped surprise new track "Pure Water".

Icy, cold and minimal, "Pure Water" is pure don't-test-me swagger and features one or two lyrical easter eggs the internet has been picking up on over the last few hours.

The first comes with the line Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, a somewhat divisive line that nods to Roll Deep's 2005 single "Heat Up", as well as a reference to his recent SK Air collaboration with Nike. We're fairly confident there's more out there, so keep an ear out.

"Pure Water" marks the first solo Skepta we've heard in a while, following a whole bag of collabs and BBK projects. It's not 100% clear if it heralds a larger project, but rumours that we're on the road to a new Skepta album are starting to gain serious momentum (he's been spotted in the studio with Dizzee and A$AP Rocky).

Updated on Nov. 1. The video has now landed.
