London-Based Jazz Collective Kokoroko Release Hotly-Anticipated Self-Titled Debut

March 11, 2019

If you're unfamiliar with the London-based outfit Kokoroko then you may be familiar with their track "Abusey Junction" which has garnered over five million streams and, after appearing on the essential We Out Here compilation on Brownswood, features on the band's hungrily anticipated self-titled debut EP.

An eight-piece band led by trumpeter Sheila M. Maurice-Grey, the group's original brand of afrobeats-influenced jazz has seen them gain plaudits with their previously released single "Uman" (which is also on the project) that made waves with it's funk-filled style.

Percussionist Onome Edgeworth commented: "We didn't want it to sound too clean — that doesn't really fit into the London sound. We wanted it to sound rough, like going out and hearing music pushed through speakers or the energy of people dancing at afrobeat parties: it's music we've seen work on dancefloors."
