HERITAGE: Yungen Takes Us Down Memory Lane Over Adele's "Hometown" (2011)

February 27, 2019

When ballad queen Adele released her debut single "Hometown Glory" back in 2007 — a year before "Chasing Pavements" propelled her into international mega-stardom — it became a surprise hit in the UK rap scene.

The track would go on to be remixed and covered by almost the entirety of said scene (and later Roll Safe), giving more than a few artists a taste of their own fame. Not only that, but a lot of young rappers had been itching to show a different side to themselves, and "Hometown Glory" gave them the perfect opportunity to do so.

The looping piano line lent itself well to rap remixes and Yungen's effort from 2011 was one of the best. In it he tells his story up to that point while shouting out the areas of South London that raised him and looking back at his younger days with misty eyes.

Now UK rap is riding higher than ever, could it be time to revisit this '07 anthem with some new versions?
