HERITAGE: Tricky Performs Stunning "Poems" With Terry Hall Of The Specials And Martina Topley-Bird (1995)

The description for this one credits this one as a track from Tricky's seminal debut Maxinquaye. Incredible though that album is, "Poems" actually comes from Tricky's Nearly God project and the album of the same name, a title which supposedly comes from an interview Tricky did with The Face magazine in which they asked him "so how does it feel to be God... well, nearly God?"

The Nearly God album saw Tricky collaborate with a long list of UK greats, including Siouxsie Sioux of goth band Siouxsie & The Banshees, Björk, Terry Hall of The Specials and Martina Topley-Bird. Here's Tricky with the latter two performing "Poems", one of two tracks to feature Hall and Topley-Bird on the album.

Similar in tone to a lot of Tricky's dubbier, trip-hop output from that era, "Poems" featured all three vocalists bringing their contrasting styles to the sparse, bass-led track. For whatever reason, the Nearly God album has been somewhat eclipsed in his catalogue, but that's all the more reason to revisit it.
