HERITAGE: Trevor Nelson's 'Soul Nation' Digs Into The History Of UKG With Wookie, So Solid, Kele Le Roc And More (2003)

Back in 2003, just as UKG was transitioning into grime, Trevor Nelson presented a timely documentary looking back at the history of black British music, starting with Northern soul and working its way through jungle, and eventually garage. This episode charts UKG's history right from its earliest roots in American house music (known as garage at the time because of the The Garage club), and the winding branches and paths as it incorporates R&B and other strictly UK influences along the way.

The third and final episode, which you can watch below, sees Nelson chat to titans of the scene who helped sculpt UK garage into what it is today. Ms. Dynamite, Craig David, Wookie, various members of So Solid, Kele Le Roc, Timmi Magic and more all say a few words about the sound's evolution, the fashion, and pivotal club nights like Twice As Nice at Alibi. The whole series is a fascinating watch, put together by the experts who were there.
