HERITAGE: Tottenham Rappers Demon Boyz Perform "This Is A Jam" Live On MTV (1987)

March 09, 2018

Originally formed by rappers Demon D and Mike J, and DJ Devastate, Demon Boyz were one of the most important hip-hop crews to come out of the UK. The Tottenham trio got their big break rapping down the phone on Dave Pearce's radio show to win a place performing on stage with Derek B, Faze One and T La Rock at Camden Palace. They ended up impressing Derek B so much he put them in touch with Music Of Life records who ultimately signed their first album.

Though their early tracks (and performances, like the MTV one below) had them rapping in quasi-American accents, Demon Boyz would become known as one of the first to rap in a UK accent, much like their contemporaries London Posse. "This Is A Jam" was the first song Demon Boyz recorded for Music Of Life and was featured on the label's Hard As Hell series in 1987. Here they are performing the track that same year live on MTV.
