HERITAGE: Swiss and Sharifa's Seminal "Cry" Is Still As Potent And Relevant Today (2005)

Aside from Asher D, Lisa Maffia, MegaMan, Romeo, Harvey and a few others, one of the best breakout starts of So Solid Crew — a gift that kept on giving through the late '90s and early '00s — was Swiss. Following the crew's dissolution Swiss switched up from their UKG roots to make hip-hop and he did so pretty effectively.

In 2005 he released the Pain 'N' Muziq album, the centrepiece of which was the hugely seminal "Cry". The original version was just Swiss on his own, but when released as a single he invited Sharifa to elevate the track with a soulful R&B hook.

That decision turned out to be a wise one and the track became a runaway success. The new Sharifa-assisted version of "Cry" found itself in heavy rotation on 1Xtra and Choice FM and resonated with a huge number of people. Swiss' bars on society and race, in particular, are still as potent and relevant today as they were in 2005.

Look what happened to the motherland / they don't wanna treat blacks the same as another man / and just because our skins different colour and / I don't change colour but they called me a 'coloured man'.
