HERITAGE: S.A.S And Juelz Santana Discuss Their Collaboration On "Coming 2 America Pt 2" For 'The Come Up' DVD (2007)

Being born in South London but going to school in New York made 2000s UK hip-hop duo S.A.S — aka Mega and Mayhem who were also part of Eurogang — a bit of a one-off. Though the instrumentals they used were often very U.S-sounding, they should be given their dues for keeping their London accents.

Their high school years in Staten Island, New York in the late '90s laid a huge foundation for them. After going back to London to record some freestyles and do some radio, one of their freestyles found its way to Cipha Sounds and they returned to New York. From there they quickly made links with Kanye, Busta, Jay Z and Dipset via a string of head-turning freestyles that got everyone talking.

It was Juelz Santana who turned out to be one of their biggest fans, though, recording several collaborations with them over the years, most notably "Coming 2 America Pt. 2" from the album of the same name.

Here's a clip, taken from The Come Up: Gangsta Grillz Edition DVD, of Juelz and S.A.S talking about how they met and a good bit of Juelz generally gassing the pair up before they play the track in question. S.A.S may not have quite broken out the way they should have, but they deserve huge recognition for making Americans take the London accent seriously in hip-hop and doing vital groundwork that led to key artists breaking through now.
