HERITAGE: Neneh Cherry Performs "Buffalo Stance" On 'Top Of The Pops' (1988)

January 25, 2018

Though the singer Neneh Cherry was born in Sweden, her stunning 1988 debut album Raw Like Sushi is inextricably woven into the fabric of British music, and vice versa. Much of the album was co-written by her husband, Cameron McVey—a frequent collaborator of Massive Attack as well as Portishead—with contributions coming from Robert Del Naja of the former. That relationship worked both ways too, with Cherry helping to secure their deal with Circa Records as well as contributing arrangement to their Blue Lines album.

Back to Raw Like Sushi. Besides being co-written by McVey, the album was largely produced by McVey and Phil Legg (under The Dynamik Duo), Massive Attack, and acid house pioneers Bomb The Bass (Mark Saunders and Tim Simenon) and others. With such a jaw-dropping cast of characters pitching in with the album—and with such talent at the centre, of course—it's no wonder the album gave us such arresting instant classics like "Buffalo Stance".

Here she is, performing the track live on Top Of The Pops, way back in 1988. Right from day one it was clear Cherry was a multi-faceted artist, just as comfortable banging out the infectious hook as she is as a rapper. Though we only ever got four studio albums (including Raw Like Sushi) over her career, hopefully 2018 is the year we get number five.
