HERITAGE: Legendary DMC Champion MC Duke Talks Politics And Freestyles (1988)

April 17, 2018

Late '80s UK rapper MC Duke (later just Duke) was a long-serving MC on Kool FM and one of the first UK rappers to find a serious level of success. As with a lot of these early British emcees, MC Duke did rap in a US accent, but his outspoken political message and abilities as a battle MC more than earn him a place in UK rap history. His biggest tune of his career was "I'm Riffin'", a much-sampled track that laid the groundwork for many that came after him.

Here he is being interviewed for late '80s UK TV show Behind The Beat. In the interview he talks about the pioneers of British rap - including the man he credits as the pioneer, Derek B - he also talks about the need for radio stations to support UK rap and play less from New York. He also talks about his decision to risk alienating certain stations by writing more political lyrics.
