HERITAGE: General Levy, Shabba Ranks And Buju Banton Discuss Dancehall And Ragga On 'The Word' (1994)

December 19, 2017

Here we have dancehall titan General Levy appearing on frequently controversial '90s Channel 4 programme The Word to talk about how he and his contemporaries stand out as dancehall MCs. He puts his uniqueness down to what he calls his "hiccup style", while also crediting the individuality of Buju Banton and his "authoritative rock stone deejay voice", as well as Shabba Ranks and Ninjaman.

Later in the clip, we hear from Shabba and Buju themselves, who talk about their own style as well as having their tracks banned in the UK. "Right now," Shabba says, "this is the world and you please some and you don't please some."
