HERITAGE: Estelle Lights Up Channel U's 'Best Of British' Awards With Her Joyful Rendition Of "1980" (2005)

March 13, 2019

It may be hard to believe but the legendary institution that was Channel U only ever held one awards show. However, that show, produced with Trinity Media and Overgroundonline, made good use of its opportunity. Over 2000 people descended on Shepherds Bush Empire to see who would win that October night.

The whole show was a time capsule of that era as they dished out Best Of British awards to Akala, Blak Twang, Crazy Titch, Jay Sean, Kano, Lethal Bizzle, Luke Biggins, Mitchell Brothers, Roll Deep, Sway and more.

30 acts were nominated by Channel U and the top 15 acts performed on the night. Of those performances, it was Estelle's that shone. It's also worth remembering "1980" was an enormous hit at the time. Though she's been quiet of late, it’s never a bad time to remind ourselves of this blinding talent.
