HERITAGE: Big Narstie, Dot Rotten And Tempman Trade Bars For 'Lost Tapes Of Brixton Vol. 1' (2002)

December 11, 2017

Before the days of Insta and Snapchat, if you wanted to get your bars filmed, you had to find a guy with a camera and make an event of it. The early days of grime saw a tonne of aspiring filmmakers pick up a camera and start shooting their mates clashing.

For today's HERITAGE, we've dipped into one of those tapes, Lost Tapes Of Brixton Vol. 1, for some footage of some very big names looking very fresh-faced. Filmed at Brockwell Park in the summer of 2002, this rare footage shows Dot Rotten, Big Narstie, PDC's Tempman, Alan B of Roadside G's and more as they trade bars back and forth in the sunshine.

As much as anything, this clip is a reminder of just how talented the grime OGs are. There's no phones with the bars written down, no studio magic—just them. It also deserves special mention for being one of the few examples of good beatboxing.
