Harvey Sutherland And Nubya Garcia Take Us On A Jazzy Expedition With "Amethyst"

October 17, 2018

Aussie multi-instrumentalist Harvey Sutherland may be from the other side of the world, but that hasn't stopped him falling in love with the burgeoning UK jazz scene and the legacy of broken beat. Much of his time has been spent in our capital recently and that's what led to him teaming up with one of the leaders of that same jazz scene, Nubya Garcia.

A prolific collaborator (his socials are filled with pictures and videos of him teaming up with jazz legends), Sutherland's new one with Garcia could prove to be the one that breaks him out of the underground. Though free-flowing and unpredictable, the cohesive musical relationship between Sutherland, Garcia and rhythm section players Kahlil Memphis and Michael Shrimpling is immediately audible, as is Sutherland's understanding of the UK brand of jazz.

Speaking on his approach to the collab, Sutherland explained: "I wanted something that had a jazz feel and lightness that was still really informed by the London broken beat scene."

Take a listen below and make sure you pay attention to Sutherland and Garcia's next moves.
