Deep Cuts: Bashy

Deep Cuts: Bashy

September 18, 2017

Bashy was one of the first, and few, grime artists to achieve commercial success beyond electro-pop/dance. The odds are good you're already familiar with Black Boys and the eponymous track that has been compared to James Brown's "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud" and Nas' "I Can", a cut which earned him critical plaudits and mainstream respect. Bashy Star also managed to carve himself out a little acting career along the way, appearing in Black MirrorTop Boy and now the latest series of 24. That's not why we're here today, though.

What sometimes gets left out of the list of 'Bashy's Impressive Achievements' are the mixtapes. 2011's Crunchie deserves some attention, for sure. But rewind back to 2006-2008 era Mr Oi! Nah!, and that's when the bangers start coming thick and fast. Chupa Chups is rightly revered as the pinnacle of this era of Bashy—but, as this list shows, Bashy.com gave us our favourite Bashy: rude, cheeky and with a whole lorry full of bars that could shatter any MC.
