EXCLUSIVE: UKG Legend MJ Cole Calls On Kojey Radical To Add Some Poetry To His 2-Step On “Soak It Up”

Having collaborated with everyone from Mary J. Blige to Wiley and AJ Tracey, legendary UK garage producer MJ Cole has now added Kojey Radical to the list of outlying rappers and singers he's worked with.

Their time in the studio together has gifted us new cut "Soak It Up", a jazzy piece of 2-step sitting behind Kojey's sharp-witted poetry and gentle crooning. With that comes a nimble little piano riff and a few more jazzy flourishes for a track that reminds us how exciting both artists are, regardless of their time in the game.

Before the song even came out, Cole made the decision to release the individual parts, including pianos, strings, synths, vocals, etc. for producers to take a turn remixing. You can still grab the parts here if you want to give it a whirl. Those fan remixes may or may not be released in some way, but in the meantime, this rich and velvety mixture of lyricism and vibrant production.

"Emerging first as an instrumental, 'Soak It Up' grew surprisingly quickly," MJ Cole explained. "Improvising at the piano always leads somewhere fruitful for me. The original piano recording was noisy, but in a good way with the sound of the piano hammers and fingers on the keys really suggesting a warm, cosy musical situation. The track starts out with a homemade sample and opens out into vocals from Kojey Radical which describe an ongoing relationship in turmoil. There's love in the song, but also recognition of the gripes and annoyances on each side. It was a real vibe putting it together."
