Carnival season may be a distant, hazy memory, but that spirit is still very much alive in certain corners of the UK. 1Forty Records, for example, have dedicated themselves to putting out music specifically for great big sound systems like this new four-track compilation, the second volume of Funky & Garage.

Opening up the EP is “Voices In My Head” from Nottingham producer Killjoy and his ally MC Shantie, who kick things off with a dark and ravey slice of UK funky. Only for the very late nights in the darkest, sweatiest clubs, “Voices In My Head” is a peak-time combination of thundering UK funky drums and cockney UKG vocals.

The remaining three tracks come from Smokey ‘Bubblin’ B, 9TRANE x Arridim, and Cardinal Sound. Ahead of the EP’s release on Sept. 17, take a listen to “Voices In My Head” below.
