DEEP CUTS: SHYSTIE

Shystie first burst onto the scene back in 2003 with her white label response to Dizzee Rascal's "I Luv U", and signed to Polydor after touring with the likes of Basement Jaxx, 50 Cent and The Streets. Her debut single, "One Wish" reached the UK Top 40 and the young talent went on to play the lead role in Channel 4's Dubplate Drama—which featured half of the UK hip-hop and grime scene—and led to further acting features in cult classic's like Adulthood and Illegal Activity.

Over the last decade, the Hackney-born MC has supported Kendrick Lamar on tour, performed and modelled at London Fashion Week; but it has to be her record of venomous diss tracks, especially for Lady Fury (2008) and Azealia Banks (2013), that cemented her reputation as a killer emcee.

With women gaining further prominence for their rap game, with the likes of Little Simz enjoying success on both sides of the pond, we took a look back at one of the pioneers, curating a Deep Cuts playlist full of Shystie's lowkey masterpieces.
