DEEP CUTS: KREPT & KONAN

Though people are gradually becoming educated on the backstory of Krept & Konan, for many the duo's career began in 2015 with the star-studded album The Long Way Home, or possibly even 2013's Young Kingz.

But there's so much more to the South London rappers that sprouted up as a twosome in the late 2000s. Did you know, for example, that Konan is the son of Jamaican ska and rocksteady legend Delroy Wilson? Wilson senior spent much of the '60s and '70s working with JA titans like Coxsone Smith, Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Prince Buster, The Wailers and just about everyone idolised by even the casual reggae fan.

Like Wilson senior, Krept & Konan seem to have inherited that magnetic pull that draws artists towards them. After meeting via the Gipset collective they were apart of, they branched off and recorded their first two mixtapes Redrum and Tsunami (the latter starting off their taste of big name guests, with verses from Ghetts, Giggs, Scorcher and more).

Young Kingz soon followed with an even more impressive roll call that included Chip, Tinie Tempah, G FrSH, Giggs, Fekky, George The Poet, Yungen, Ari, Yana Toma, Siah and Anthony Thomas. Then, of course, their 2015 album The Long Way Home fired them into the mainstream consciousness (and even into the US with stars like Rick Ross, Emeli Sandé, Rebecca Garton, Ed Sheeran, Jeremih, YG, Wiz Khalifa, Skepta, DJ Mustard, Derrick Morgan, and let's not forget Konan's mum on "Fell Apart").

Certain cynics were somewhat unfairly shocked that the Croydon duo were able to not only follow up the album, but in a lot of ways surpass it. The dual mixtape project 7 Days and 7 Nights delivered on the promises of its predecessor with two contrasting but equally well-received collections: the former, a rock-solid run of UK hip-hop cuts with an eye on the club, while the latter took the tempo down a notch with more sultry R&B jams.

By now, no one should question their longevity or versatility. But if you still need proof, scroll down below for Krept & Konan's Deep Cuts.
